Jennifer Boyd is the owner of Jennifer Boyd Designs. She designs and crafts wreaths for holiday decorations, collegiate and pro-team spirit memorabilia, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and bridal and baby showers. You name the occasion, and she’ll make your wreath!
In addition to designing some of the most beautiful wreaths that you’ll find, Jennifer also serves as a Financial Specialist I for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension – Conference Services. Jennifer and Nik , her husband of almost 4 years, live in Texas with their two dogs Shiner, and Sniper.
I sent Jennifer a few questions and asked for some pictures.
I began making wreaths in the fall of 2011, so almost 2 years now.
What first sparked your interest in becoming a wreath designer?
I was a florist for nearly ten years. I have always loved being creative and have tried my hand at many, many things; floral design, cake decorating, making mums for high schoolers and creating jewelry. A florist contacted me after seeing some of my work and asked me to work in her store, and I worked there part time for over a year, creating and designing holiday wreaths and floral arrangements. My wreaths were popular, and I was having a fun creating them! In order to have more control over my wreaths, and have more time at home with my husband, I quit working for the flower shop and started making them in my free time in our home. I started Jennifer Boyd Designs almost a year ago when my hobby became a full-blown business!
What do you enjoy most about creating the wreaths?
I love designing them. To be able to put my creativity to good use for others to enjoy is great! I love seeing my clients happy and satisfied with their purchase.
What inspires you?
What doesn’t inspire me?!? I make it a point to always be open to inspiration, so perhaps that is why I am able to find it just about anywhere! Anytime I walk into a store and see a roll of ribbon, a cute sign that I’ve never used before, or bright colors, it all comes together and my mind just starts working overtime. I am always thinking about decorating and making something new and exciting.
What do you for fun when not making wreaths?
When I am not making wreaths or working full time at Texas A&M, I find myself reading or traveling and fishing with my husband. I married into a family of fishermen and we love going whenever we can! On the weekends, we can also be found at various Texas car shows, showing a 1963 Chevy truck.
Yes! Be ready and able to accept criticism and know that you can’t please everyone. Always use the best quality products, and stand behind your work. I never make anything that I wouldn’t have in my own home or office. Don’t always take the “cheap” road out. It’s simple: if you use quality products, you will make long-lasting wreaths. While some people may not want to pay for that quality, you will find that most customers can tell the difference between a designer just throwing something together to make a buck, and someone who puts their whole heart into every design they produce.
Don’t sell yourself short, start small, and believe in your work. JBD started by word of mouth and has grown rapidly over the past few months. Social media will become your best friend! If you stand behind and believe in what you produce, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish.
